WebbTheranos Inc. (/ ˈ θ ɛr. ə n. oʊ s /) was an American privately held corporation that was touted as a breakthrough health technology company. Founded in 2003 by then 19-year-old Elizabeth Holmes , [4] Theranos raised more than US$ 700 million from venture capitalists and private investors, [5] resulting in a $10 billion valuation at its peak in 2013 and 2014. WebbHolmes and Theranos were ultimately charged with deceiving investors through false or exaggerated claims about the accuracy of the company's blood-testing technology, in what was called "massive fraud." The case, U.S. v. Holmes, et al. began in August 2024. Holmes was convicted in 2024 of defrauding investors and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
